Going for Gold – 7 ways

goldGold is the premium currency in Rail Nation.

You can certainly play the game without it, but having some gold attached to your account opens up several advantages… some worth spending the gold on and some maybe not-so-much.

How can I get myself some Gold?

There are  number of ways to acquire gold in game; usually a result of money, luck or effort.  Let’s consider a few here:

1. Prestige from earlier rounds

At the completion of a round, Rail Nation will convert your final prestige score into gold available for you to use during future rounds ON THE SAME SERVER.

The rate of conversion is currently one gold per 1,000 prestige. That may not be over-the-top in generosity but it’s a heck of a lot better than nothing at all !!!

A modest final score of 100,000 prestige points can set you up to purchase a 7-day Plus account (100 gold) without spending a single cent of your hard-earned cash.

This brings me to the quickest (but by no means cheapest) method of obtaining gold.

2. Purchase Gold with real-life currency

If you’re willing to spend the money, you can outright buy the gold you require at any time.

Gold is sold in various ‘packages’ from the Gold shop.

goldshop1You can access the Gold Shop by heading to the control panel at the top right of the screen and selecting the first button, “To the shop.”

package-sizeDepending on your available funds, features most sought after, impatience, general commitment to the game and level of competitiveness at the time, you can select an appropriate size gold package for you.

Personally, I consider a Plus account a must-have for an enjoyable game, but that is just me. A Plus account will run you back around 100 gold every 7 days if you have to purchase it.

Other premium features tend to fall into “nice to have but not essential” or the “complete waste of gold” baskets, in my opinion.

You really do not need a lot of gold to enjoy a great game.

That’s right, fellas… the size of the package is not really what counts. It all comes down to what you do with it. 🙂

3. Competitions

Competitions can offer and vast array of prizes, including that much sought after gold.

A “gold” comp typically offers 24 hours of Plus, along with 20 gold to the winner.

Of course, even if you don’t come in first place, there is still gold to be won. 2nd place still wins 75% of the maximum gold (15 gold) 3rd place gets 60% (12 gold), 4th place gets 50% (10 gold), etc… you get the idea.

4. The Lottery

The lottery offers another chance to win yourself some gold.

The maximum amount of gold you can win on a single lotto ticket will depend upon the level of your lottery office. A level 1 lottery, for instance, could see you scratch up as much as 30 gold.

lottery-freebieIt would normally seem counter-productive scratching for gold if you are buying those tickets WITH gold, but you do get a free lottery ticket each day.

In addition, you can often win addition tickets simply by collecting station bonuses for your team mates.

5. Tutorial Tasks

At the beginning of each round the conductor has some tasks for you if you decide to play through the tutorial and will often give you some gold in order to complete them.

Of course, doing all of the tasks will also require you to spend some of that gold so be smart about it.

Example: you are awarded 15 gold for redressing your avatar in something from your limited wardrobe. When it comes time to “buy a clothing item” there is no need to spend the whole 15 gold… go for something cheap and cheerful off the 5-gold rack and pocket the balance.

6. Bonus Codes

Every now and then the team at Rail Nation will release a bonus code you can redeem for goodies, such as free gold.

Be on the lookout for these and be sure to redeem them within the stated time limit.

In order to redeem a bonus code, simply head to the options button at the top right of the screen and select “Redeem Bonus Code” on your profile tab.

7. FaceBook

You have an additional chance of winning gold each week on the official Rail Nation Facebook Page.

Every Saturday 150 gold are up for grabs on the social platform.

Entering is quick and easy. In fact, all you need to do is write your server and avatar name in the comments section.

Note: If you do not wish to have your regular Facebook profile associated with your in-game avatar name, you might want to give this one a miss (or create a new profile just for gaming).

Did I forget something?

I’ve mentioned 7 of the ways to come across gold.  Have I missed something? Let me know.

What is your experience with gold? I’d love to hear it.
